Geog 337 Final Project

Image
Background: The goal of this assignment was to create an original project to showcase GIS skills learned  throughout the semester and to present your findings. For my project I choose to perform raster and network analysis to examine detour routes for a road project in Appleton, WI. I choose this for my project because I am interested in a career in planning and wanted to use GIS skills in a similar matter to how I would in my future career Data Sources: My data sources for this project included the Appleton, Wisconsin GIS team webpage, which included a variety of downloadable datasets relating to information within the city. Also, I consulted the Wisconsin department of transportation webpage for traffic data. Literature Review:  There were three articles which were used to generate ideas for this project Winters Et Al: This research project was conducted in Vancouver, British Columbia to determine which roads in the city were most conducive to bicycling. This ar...

Lab 3- Geodatabase

Image
For our final lab we were tasked with designing a geodatabase to be used in our final course project. My project involved using raster analysis and network analysis to create detour routes for road construction projects. Because this project was not going to be published or the data used by others I choose to use a personal file geodatabase. Geodatabase Elements Feature Dataset: In my geodatabase I created a feature dataset entitled Appleton. Within this feature dataset are shapefiles for the Appleton street grid, Appleton city boundaries. I also incorporated topology into the feature dataset to make sure that the streets shapefile was topologically accurate. This would be important for creating my geometric network. The network of city streets was also included within the feature dataset. Rasters: In addition to the feature dataset I included all of the outputs for each raster I created during the raster analysis portion of my project. This involved creating rasters for differe...
